Why we garden organically
The decision to apply for organic certification from the Soil Association was something of a ‘no brainer’ for us. The land in which we sit has been farmed organically since the early 90s and, in truth, we were pretty much gardening organically anyway: getting the proper certification felt like the logical next step.
In Sarah's own words: "I felt strongly that we should be able to demonstrate our credentials properly, and not having the SA certification would be like swotting for an exam that you never got to sit. I can’t claim to have had a ‘road to Damascus’ moment where I saw the light: I simply didn’t know any different. I was learning on the job and never really came into contact with chemical pesticides or herbicides, and all the fertilising I was aware of originated in a cow!
"Joking apart, we do take our organic credentials very seriously. It’s not always easy and we are constantly learning - I suspect we will be forever. What we can say for certain 15 years in is that we are definitely seeing the benefits and it is getting easier."
