Alys Fowler is an organic gardener, presenter and award-winning journalist. She specialises in polyculture food-growing that promotes soil health, wildlife and a gentle abundance for everything that call her garden home.

Born in Hampshire, Alys was influenced by her mother's gardening talents and the degree of self-sufficiency it afforded the family. She studied at the Royal Horticultural Society, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, where she became interested in bringing a more organic and accessible aesthetic to landscape gardening. In 1998, she was awarded a Smithsonian Scholarship to study at the New York Botanical Gardens based in the Bronx.

It is through Alys’ love of plants and ecology that she came to writing. She has written 11 books, including Hidden Nature, which was shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize in 2018, as well as her first work of fiction, The Woman Who Buried Herself, published in 2021 by Hazel Press. Her latest book, Bogland’s - A Journey Through Land and Water explores the importance of peat in our landscapes.

Alys has written for numerous publications including the National Geographic, the Observer, the Guardian, Time Out, Gardens Illustrated, Red Magazine and Country Living.

She lives in mid Wales and gardens on a steep slope by the sea.
