Since an early age, when brought up on a Dorset farm, Hugh has held a strong interest and commitment to the natural world, seeking to maintain an ecological balance wherever possible in the agricultural and horticultural environments in which he has thrived.
Therefore, it was not surprising that whilst pursuing a plant agronomy and research career, Hugh adopted a biological approach to plant production methods. From all aspects of commercial agriculture and farming, right down to hands-on, down-to-earth gardening, which has been Hugh’s long-term obsession.
Having pursued a variety of technical roles in international agriculture and research organisations, in 2016 Hugh set up his company Planting Ideas, providing agronomic advice to companies seeking to bring new and novel bio-products to agricultural and horticultural markets. By their nature, his customers’ products promote natural systems, encourage biodiversity and enhance environments for animal and plant life.
With this strong ethos, it was a logical progression for Hugh to progress further and create a new venture with a business partner Jonathan Tebb Roger (Grazers Ltd), called Gardening for Wildlife, which combines Hugh’s knowledge of biological systems in a commercial world together with ecological protection to best advise others in their desire to garden as naturally as possible.
